The first (and potentially most important) thing you need to know about me is that I’m generally not a huge deckbuilding fan. There are definitely exceptions to this rule, but overall, they’re typically not games I gravitate towards. However, the artwork in Fliptoons immediately caught my attention. Then, being able to learn and play on BGA was amazing and gave me a taste of the game without having to buy it, which was great. But (unsurprisingly to most), I ended up purchasing a physical copy after a few games on BGA because it’s such a great, quick, affordable, portable, easy to teach game that plays decently solo and definitely plays well at various multiplayer counts as well.

The premise is pretty standard for a deck builder: you get points each round which you can then use to either add cards to your deck or remove existing from your deck. There are two parts that really make this game stand out, though. First is the incredible synergies and combos you can create with the various animals throughout the deck. The second is how the game ends and how someone wins, which occurs when a player successfully has thirty or more points in their tableau at one time. The player tableaus are 3×2 grids, so as you can imagine, it can sometimes be a little difficult to craft a deck that can score that well at one time.

I’ll admit Fliptoons isn’t perfect, but I think it is amazing for what it is. I greatly appreciate the solo mode as it’s easy to play and facilitate, but I also like that this can be played with almost anyone. It’s just a really solid, classic deckbuilder with adorable artwork, and accessible design, and a short play time. Even as a non-deckbuilding fan, there’s no reason for me not to have this in my collection.
