What does this expansion add? There are four new spirits that increase variety and add new twists and strategy options (two with the blue background for scoring points at the end of the game, and two with the tan background for the immediate effects). Also, as expected, fireflies get added which score points and can provide an instant victory.

At the end of the game, each firefly in your mountain scores one point; they are collected when you complete two squares at the same time. Normally, you lose the chance to place a second spirit, but this fills the spot of any extra spirits to provide some bonus for achieving that. If you can manage to collect four fireflies before the game ends, you immediately win the game.

New and exciting spirits are always welcome, especially since they increase replayability and just add more avenues and decision making. The fireflies provide a much-needed benefit when completing two squares since you can’t get two spirits on the same turn. The instant win condition is really neither here nor there for me; I’d rather just finish the game even if someone has four fireflies.

My one complaint with this expansion is that the rule book is ever so slightly too wide to fit nicely in the original box. The components fit easily, but the rules are like one centimeter too wide creating a tight squeeze that’s really unnecessary.
